Scotsburn Lava Flow Pinot Noir 2025

from $77.00

In 2012 we planted our vineyard into the remnant soils of the Clarendon lava flow, a 6km flow extending south-east from Mt Buninyong formed by an eruption approximately 125,000 years ago. Known locally as the “chocolate soils”, these dark, rocky soils are prized for their fertility and cursed for their rocky composition.

Covering 1.5 ha. across an east facing slope that reaches 500m elevation, the vineyard is close-planted at 1m x 1.5m. Importantly, the north-west to south-east row orientation ensures optimal use of canopy shading across the warmer months of the growing season. 500m elevation comes with a significant diurnal temperature range leading to cold nights that preserve natural acidity. The vineyards rocky foundation lends powerful depth of flavour and fine mineral tension that ensures the structure for graceful cellaring.

Matured for 11 months in 500L puncheons, the final blend was drawn from select barrels of two Pinot Noir clones MV6 (70%) and Pommard (30%), with 30% new French oak.

Sustainably farmed and thoughtfully made, this wine speaks with clarity of its home vineyard.

It is an expressive wine that reflects our corner of wine country.

94 points – Campbell Mattinson

‘This is a satiny Pinot Noir with a beautiful crush of rose-petal like flavours/scents running the length of it. This element makes the wine feel both distinctive and special. The cherry and cranberry flavours here are silken too, while lavender, sweet spice, and roasted nut oak notes continue the exotic theme. This wine is both backward and forward, in style, at once; it sits down firmly in the palate and then lifts off in a soar.’
